Replication in two farms in the province of Cádiz (Spain)

Following the established schedule, in the month of July we have begun with the expansion of the areas where we currently working with the laser and we have started the trials in two more farms in the province of Cádiz, “El Chorreadero” in the municipality of San José del Valle, and “Torremesa” in Chipiona.

The cultivation of table grapes in the area of ​​Rota, Chipiona and Sanlúcar has acquired great importance in recent years, and struggle against one of its greatest dangers such as small passerine birds is quiet important for us. The results obtained have been really encouraging, especially with sparrows, one of the most harmful small birds in the area. The objective of this extension is none other than to continue carrying out tests that demonstrate the positive reaction or not of the different animals to this system.

The IRIS-VOLTERRA team is continuing its tests and demonstrations in Spain, this time in Burgos.

On July 18, 2018, following the progress of the last few months, IRIS continued its tests with the Handheld Laser provided by BCG. With these flights, the aim is twofold: on the one hand, to test the handheld laser system in as many different contexts and animals as possible and, on the other, to show the system to as many potential users as possible.

In the farm selected in Burgos by Volterra, we can observe the influence of the laser on rabbits and roe deer. As the area is not very wooded and has flat vegetation, it is easier to make observations.

Although the interest of the different farmers is very high, especially seeing the good results in birds, the same is not true for mammals (rabbit, wild boar and roe deer). In the latter case, the current configuration, which will be improved in the coming months, is not fully effective.

IRIS is able to graphically document the reaction of several roe deer to the Handheld Laser.

Last July 7th, Santi (IRIS) and Nacho (Volterra), after many failed attempts in the last months, managed to record on video, the reaction of several roe deer to the Laser Fence system. The success of this event is threefold:

– It has been clearly documented, through a video produced by IRIS for the project partners, how these mammals react to the laser. On other occasions, the presence of the IRIS team involved an external agent that could influence the animal’s behaviour. In this case, the recording was successfully made at a distance of 700m.

– Simultaneously, it has been possible to take pictures with the animals’ drone and it has been decisive in the search for the animals.

– The effect of the drone’s noise when flying on the animals has been proven.

The success of the test lies in the selection of the work area by Nacho: San Martín de Humada (Burgos). On the other hand, the time, 6:00 a.m., was also a relevant element: the laser beam was visible at more than 1 km and it is the time when these animals graze in the agricultural plots near the forests.

Juliaan Kleinloog visited Agrosol vineyard seminar in Hungary

Area Sales Manager of Bird Control Group, Juliaan Kleinloog visited Agrosol vineyard seminar in Hungary. The seminar is organised by Agrosol 2000 which is one of the reseller of Bird Control Group specialised in the solutions for agricultural industry in Hungary. Bird Control Group, Agrosol 2000, Syngenta and some local grape growers were participants of this event. The seminar was dedicated to learn about new agricultural solutions for pest controllers. The biggest challenge they see is that there is no effective and at the same time sustainable solution for pest controllers. Juliaan Kleinloog discussed with the participants about EU Life Laser Fence project that Bird Control Group is involved in and the possibilities of using the laser fence to repel pest animals. The participants of the event thought that the technology would be quite useful and they would like to know the costs of such laser fence and the applications of the technology in the future.
