On Friday, February 23th, Santiago Martinez from IRIS and Nacho Martín from Volterra performed several trials with the Handheld laser in the agricultural fields of Anguiano, where farmers are having severe problems with deers eating the crops. Volterra and Iris are visiting Fima in Zaragoza

Tags :

Santiago Martínez from Iris and Egbert Sonneveld from Volterra visited the largest agricultural show in Spain. The reason was to investigate if the participation to this type of fair would be interesting to promote the technology tested in Life Laser Fence in the future. Several farmers were very interested to do trials with the handheld laser on their land because the nuisance by rabbits, wild boar, deer and birds is enormous and the losses in product as well. On Fima there were several companies specialised in frightening away animals with noise, lights and moving items.

Egbert and Santiago also met the company Smart Rural specialised in UAV services as well but now promoting a tool called Tilea which is a GIS where all kind of data can be uploaded including ortophoto, NDVI biomass pictures and excel sheets with numbers. We were offered to try Tileo on different projects for a limited period of time. Soon a meeting will take place in Valladolid in the Smart Rural offices.

Volterra helps to collect more data on the reaction of rabbits

Tags :

The members of the experimental design workgroup would like to receive more data on the reaction of rabbits to the laser with the green light, Volterra is doing trials with the handheld laser with  farmers in the surroundings of their office in Palencia. Farmer Enrique in Soto de Cerrato and Venta de Baños is almost desperate because the rabbits are destroying the irrigated crops this year. Due to the drought last autumn and winter, the animals have no other place to eat than on cropland.

We used the car and its lights to get as close as possible to the rabbits in the fields. Since this was done very carefully only very few rabbits were scared away by the car. From the car it was easy to reach the direct surroundings of the animals. As seen in previous sessions, only very few saw the laser and reacted to it running away but most of them frosted when the laser approached. We filled in the log forms prepared by BCG to enable the workgroup to give comments in the next meeting by skype.
