Game & Wildlife Scottish Demonstration Farm
GWSDF is a registered charity in Scotland, UK, and is part of The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT); a UK-wide charity conducting research into practical solutions to conservation conflicts (www.gwct.org.uk). GWSDF is specifically concerned with researching and demonstrating conservation issues on grass and livestock-dominated farmland in Scotland, based at Auchnerran Farm in Aberdeenshire. Work at Auchnerran Farm began earlier this year and GWSDF was granted charitable status in September 2015.
GWCT has been researching game and wildlife issues since the 1930s and has an excellent reputation for producing high quality data often on controversial subjects, and for helping solve problems that occur where multiple land users disagree on matters of management and policy. We use our science to guide practitioners through our Advisory Service and influence policy makers – and indeed many of our management solutions are now embedded in Scottish and UK agricultural policy.
As well as our new demonstration farm in Aberdeenshire, we have been running another at Loddington, Leicestershire, UK (cereal-dominated), since 1992 where we have maintained a profitable, productive commercial lowland farm at the same time as increasing biodiversity. For example, farmland birds at Loddington quickly rose in number to pre-1970s levels.
