Dr Jenny Sneddon is a Senior Lecturer at LJMU. She has been working with the rest of the LJMU team in monitoring the responses of ground animals to the utilisation of Agrilaser. In particular, here presented, two experiments that involved the observations of rabbits and squirrels in two of the UK trials. After the installation of the Agrilaser changes in the rabbit and squirrels behaviours were monitored with CCTV or trap cameras.

Badger deterrent trials in UK

Tags :

Lasers are being investigated to examine their usefulness in deterring small mammals from areas of land as an alternative to using pesticides and rodenticides. In this video we see a Badger walking along the edge of the field, the laser is used as a non-physical interaction with the Badger so as to make it change its path. This is a demonstration of the ability of lasers to deter animals from a path when in the open, showing their usefulness in potentially keeping animals away from specific areas of land.

PestTech Event in Milton Keynes, UK

Tags :

Our Area Sales Manager, Gijs Groen participated in PestTech, The UK’s Premier Pest Control Exhibition on the 7th of November. This exhibition is for the pest controllers. Gijs was sharing a stand with our British partner PestFix. Gijs spoke with many pest controllers about the EU Life Laser Fence project and the pest controllers were very interested in the trials we were doing. They were also highly enthusiastic about the idea itself to repel pests animals since they didn’t find any effective and long-lasting solution yet. Gijs also demonstrated our automated laser bird repellent system and how it works.

LIFE to LIFE interactions

Tags :

On Thursday 12th September a meeting was held in Bangor, North Wales, the first of a series to initiate a collaboration between LIFE Laser Fence and ScuriousLIFE (Sciuriosity – Evolving IAS grey squirrel management techniques in the UK, LIFE14 NAT/UK/000467). At the meeting there was a useful discussion of the details and practicalities of both projects and also the shared interests and potential interactions between the two.

ScuriousLIFE was represented by Dr. Craig Shuttleworth while the participants from LIFE Laser Fence were Dr. Martin Sharp (Project Manager), Dr. Jenny Sneddon (Senior Lecturer in Vertebrate Environmental Physiology) and Dr. Eduardo Cordova-Lopez (Senior Researcher).

Conversations focused shared themes of the projects, such as biodiversity, invasive species and habitats as well as natural and environmentally friendly ways to manage movement of animals considered to be pests or invasive alien species.

It was agreed that there is high potential for interaction and collaboration between the projects and future meetings are planned.
